STEPS TO ADMINISTERING MEDICATIONS

 

Step 1: Wash your hands before giving the medications and then after you give medications. Answer any questions that the consumer may have.

Step 2: Talk to the consumers. Explain what you are doing before you give medications Answer any questions that the consumer may have.

Step 3: Check the medications

  • Remove the medication from the locked area and check the prescription label against the medication log to make sure that they match.

  • Before pouring the medication, check the prescription label against the medication order to make sure that they match.

  • After you pour the medication, and before you pass the medication check the prescription label against the medication log entry again to make sure they match. This is 3rd check to prevent human error.

STEP 4: Check the Seven Rights. These are the basic information needed to assure the medication is being taken safely. The DSP needs to be sure he or she has the:

RIGHT PERSON:

  • Ask the individual their name

  • You must also compare the individuals name on the prescription label, the medications order and the medications log.

RIGHT MEDICATION:

  • Compare the medication name on the prescription label, the medications order and the medication log.

  • Look at the medication, if there’s anything different about the size, shape or color of the medication, DO NOT DISPENSE the medication to an individual. Call the pharmacist and then notify the Administrator immediately.

RIGHT DOSE:

  • The right dose is how much all the medication you`re supposed to give the individual at one time.

  • Compare the dose on the prescription label, the medication order, and the medication log.

RIGHT TIME:

  • It is very important for the medication to be given at the time of the day that is written on the medication order.

RIGHT ROUTE:

  • The route means how and where the medication goes into the body.

RIGHT REASON: (New)

  • Right reason, specially for PRN. What is the reason and why are you giving this medication to an individual.

RIGHT DOCUMENTATION:

  • Each time a medication administered, it must be documented.

  • Double check your documentation as soon as you have finish giving medication and again at the end of the day.

Following the seven rights each time you asssit and individual with self administration of medication is the best way to prevent medication errors.
